The West Coast Governor Service Overhaul Process

A properly functioning propeller governor (also referred to as a Constant Speed Unit), works tirelessly and quietly without you really knowing. It is constantly changing pressures to maintain the RPM at your selected setting, despite varying manifold pressure, leaning, flight profile and many other factors. Governor TBO’s vary considerably depending on the manufacturer and your specific flight conditions. For example, agricultural spraying and aerobatic operations are the hardest on the governor, due to extreme flight operations which are normal in these modes of flight.

The Overhaul Process:

• Perform initial inspection and work order generation.
• Disassembly, cleaning, and paint removal.
• Visual and dimensional inspection for excessive wear, corrosion (rust or pitting), and service limits.
• NDI – Non-Destructive Inspection/Magnaflux parts to identify micro fissures or any flaws invisible to the human eye.
• Confirm all applicable Service Bulletins, Service Letters and Airworthiness Directives have been complied with.
• Plate and paint as necessary.
• Reassemble the governor per the manufacturer’s overhaul manual and specifications, using their prescribed list of parts, such as new seals, gaskets, O-rings and other required hardware.
  If a key part has been rejected, you will be advised and a quote will be presented prior to proceeding. On some rare occasions it might be necessary to order a part which is infrequently used directly from the manufacturer. Again, this is NOT a common event, as we have a very large and extensive inventory of parts in-house.
   
• Functional bench test and setting the manufacturers prescribed settings for your specific governor.
• Final inspection and preparation of the FAA 8130-3 (Yellow Tag – Return to Service Authorization).
• Packing, with governor base gasket, and ship to the customer using their preferred method of shipping.
